DHH Washington DC Office Attended Reception Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to China

On the evening of June 29th, 2017, Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Tiankai Cui hosted a reception at the Chinese Embassy to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Hong Kong's Return to China. DHH Washington DC Law Office was invited to attend. Senior Partner Sen Liu, rotation lawyer Yan Xin and Legal Assistant Xingya Guo attended the reception. More than 500 guests from the US government, Congress, foreign Ambassadors and diplomats, former US government officials, think tanks, business community, media and overseas Chinese communities attended this event.

Ambassador Cui said in his remarks, twenty years ago, China and the world witnessed together the historical moment of Hong Kong's return to China after more than a century of extraordinary journey. The moment when China's national flag was raised at the ceremony on the night of June 30th, 1997, Hong Kong started a new chapter of history and the innovative idea of "one country, two systems" started to be put into practice. It was a great step forward for China's national unification and rejuvenation. Ambassador Cui stressed that, history has validated the vigor and vitality of "one country, two systems". In accordance with the Constitution of People’s Republic of China and the Hong Kong Basic Law, the central government has faithfully followed the principles of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy of Hong Kong. The success of "one country, two systems" has earned international recognition. Ambassador Cui also pointed out that, it is heartening to see that economic and trade exchanges between Hong Kong and the U.S. keep growing. China hopes that the U.S. will fully respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as supporting the practice of "one country, two systems" in Hong Kong that can safeguard Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability. It is U.S.’ inherent commitment to support a sustainable, healthy and steady development of China-US relations that benefit our two peoples.

The event also reconvened many DHH friends, including Anna Ashton, Director of Business Advisory Services at US-China Business Council; Ryan Ong, Director of International Business Policy at National Association of Manufacturers; securities lawyer Fang Liu, Mei& Mark LLP; Michael Stenger, Chief of Staff at Office of the Sergeant at Arms; Dr. Willie May, Director of Major Research and Training Initiatives at the University of Maryland; and representatives of Chinese enterprises and university students.
