DHH Washington DC Law Office attended the 2017 Dongsheng- Dao Ventures U.S.-China Entrepreneurship Competition
The first, first-runner up and second-runner up prizes went to: SkyCool Systems, represented by Mr. Eli Goldstein, introduced a breakthrough energy-efficient AC and cooling system solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; Mantra, represented by Mr. Sam Waldo, put forward a social venture concept that designed lifestyle sunglasses and sold them at a buy-one-give-one system to help Yunnan rural children in need; and Takachar, represented by Mr. Kevin Kung, launched a low-cost solution to tap into value of agricultural residues, aimed also at reducing carbon emissions in developing countries.
Other presenters included Mr. Zhao Xin of Antares, Mr. Yotam Ariel of Bluefield, Mr. Brian Christie of Brainsy, Mr. Frank Yu from CartilaGen, Mr. Weijie Poh of PathoVax, Mr. Amar Bakshi of Shared Studios, and Ms. Mariela Alfonzo of State of Place. They each represented a very diverse area of business focus ranging from healthcare to public art-turned-social design to the usage of software, data collection by micro-satellites and AI.
North America division is unique in its explicit focus on social impact. In addition to comprehensive business plan, proof of concept pilot project, and proper management and operational team, Dongsheng-Dao Ventures evaluate the contestants based on social benefits the technology can generate for communities. Winners are excited to test out their technologies in China while their intellectual property is properly protected by strong local counsel.
