Mr. Ong began by introducing the history and current membership of NAM. Founded in 1895, NAM has a long history of powerful lobbying and advocacy on behalf of US manufacturers. Headquartered in DC, NAM also has branches in San Francisco, Charlotte, New Jersey, Minnesota, Detroit, Houston, Chicago, Pennsylvania and New England. NAM represents 14,000 large and small members in almost every industrial sector and across all 50 states. Besides, NAM also has member corporations from Germany, India and Latin America, at least two Chinese corporations have recently joined NAM. 30 in-house policy experts provide members with unmatched access and information on the key issues, including energy, labor relations, innovation, health care, laws, regulations and taxes.
NAM National Summit is in late January, on average 500 to 600 members attend the meeting. In addition, per members’ requests, NAM also design operation-driven projects, such as the development of internet of things and digital revolution. Despite the fact that in recent years, due to production element cost increased in China, a number of NAM members have moved their factories to Vietnam, Cambodia and other Southeast Asia countries, NAM has re-oriented its attention on China, especially after President Xi and President Trump’s first meeting, US manufacturers rekindled their interest in China and pay attention to issues like standardization, excess productivity, trademark and patent protection, trade secret and enforcement of intellectual property rights.
NAM members are adapting to the opportunities and challenges brought by technology innovation. China is also going through its own transformation for more high-tech-driven and high value-added manufacturing sector. DHH DC expressed the willing to cooperate with NAM on intellectual property protection, manufacturing standardization and cross-border investment in manufacture sector. Mr. Ong welcomes the opportunity to cooperation with DHH, starting from joint seminars where members can get informed answers about the development and enforcement of intellectual property rights in China.
