Final of Young Lawyers English Speech Contest & Symposium on Intellectual Property Enforcement and Prosecution Trends in the U.S. were Successfully Held

On August 25, 2018, Final of Young Lawyers English Speech Contest of My Views on Sino-US Cross-Border IPR Protection and Dispute Resolution & Symposium on Intellectual Property Enforcement and Prosecution in the U.S were successfully held in Beijing DHH (Shenzhen) Law Firm. The guests and judges present at the event included: Mr. Shaohu Luan, Chairman of the Board of Partners of DHH; Mr. Richard Daynes, Permanent Legal Counsel of the United States Department of Justice; Ms. Shan Luan, Legal Specialist of the US Embassy in China; Mr. Fuxing Gong, the former Director of Patent Department of Shenzhen Intellectual Property Office as well as the present Vice Executive President & Secretary-General of Shenzhen Patent Association; Ms. Weiwei Li, Professor of International Law at Shenzhen University; Mr. Wenjie Gao, Director of International & Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Work Committee of Shenzhen Lawyers Association; Senior Partners of DHH like Huadong Tang, Hao Chen, Xinze Liu, Yuexi Yao; Mr. Chunhui Fang, Senior Partners of Beijing DHH Law Firm; Mr. Yimin Liu, Senior Partner of Beijing DHH (Shanghai) Law Firm; Partners of DHH like Hongbo Zhou, Meiping Zhang, etc. There were a total of more than 60 people attending the contest, including contestants from various offices of DHH, lawyers of Beijing DHH（Shenzhen） Law Firm, clients from Shenzhen, and reporters from Shenzhen Sina and other media. Mr. Sen Ye, Director of Beijing DHH (Shenzhen) Law Firm, and Mr. Chunhui Fang, Senior Partner of Beijing DHH Law Firm hosted the contest.

Mr. Huadong Tang, Management Committee Member & Senior Partner of DHH, first delivered an opening address on behalf of DHH Management Committee. Director Tang warmly welcomed all the participants and the judges and expressed his best wishes to Sino-US relations including trade relations. He also expressed his expectation for the following speeches given by the young talents.

Subsequently, totally 9 contestants from all offices of DHH were divided into three groups to deliver speeches in turn. The speeches sticked to the hot topics, such as intellectual property protection and Sino-US trade disputes, etc. After the speeches of each group, the invited guests respectively made brilliant comments on the performances of the contestants.
Ms. Shan Luan, Legal Specialist of the US Embassy in China, pointed out in her comment that, American intellectual property legal system itself has many problems like other countries. In recent years, the United States Congress and intellectual property management departments have been continuously improving on the relevant issues to make the legal framework more conducive to innovation, which enlightens that China should have the courage to create a more complete intellectual property system according to our own situation.
The speech contest was exhilarating and heated up all the time. Finally, after fierce competition, Xuanyu Liu from Beijing DHH (Qingdao) Law Firm won the first prize; Xu Wang from Beijing DHH (Jinan) Law Firm and Zeyu Peng from Beijing DHH (Changsha) Law Firm won the second prize; Shuo Yang from Beijing DHH (Shenzhen) Law Firm, Xianlin Qiu from Beijing DHH (Shanghai) Law Firm and Junwei Zheng from Beijing DHH Law Firm won the third prize; Jingjing Shao from Beijing DHH (Shenzhen) Law Firm, Yi Sun and Xiaojun Qiu from Beijing DHH (Qingdao) Law Firm won the honorable mention. Senior Partners Xinze Liu and Yuexi Yao, Partners Meiping Zhang and Hongbo Zhou respectively presented the trophies and certificates to the winners and posed for a group photo with them.

After the speech contest, the second session of the event – Symposium on Intellectual Property Enforcement and Protection Trends in the U.S & Sino-US Intellectual Property Protection Seminar began. Firstly, Lawyer Hao Chen, Senior Partner of DHH & Leader of Intellectual Property Team, delivered a keynote speech themed as "Analysis of and Response to the Intellectual Property Protection Status of American Enterprises in China".

Then, Lawyer Yuexi Yao, Senior Partner of DHH & Vice Executive Director of Beijing DHH (Shanghai) Law Firm, delivered a keynote speech on the theme of “Cross-border Investment and Intellectual Property Protection Service Provided by Beijing DHH (Shanghai) Law Firm”. Based on the current investment situation of American enterprises in China, she introduced the willingness and efforts of Beijing DHH (Shanghai) Law Firm has made in protecting intellectual property rights for American enterprises.

Finally, Richard Daynes, Permanent Legal Counsel of the United States Department of Justice, gave a speech themed as “Presentation Skills of Highly-Effective Lawyers”. He shared the presentation skills that a gold lawyer should pay attention to during the speeches and debates, respectively from three perspectives of “Performance-selling you”， “Preparation”， and “Presentation-Selling your case”. Contestants and audiences had benefited greatly from his sharing and actively interacted with him on Sino-US intellectual property issues.

In the end, Mr. Shaohu Luan, Chairman of Board of Partners of DHH, gave a closing address. He mentioned, “ DHH should undertake social responsibilities. Our lawyers should cooperate more with American legal colleagues on the exchanges and communication of Sino-US legal system, pay more attention to intellectual property protection for American enterprises in China, and make positive efforts and explorations”.
